Waterfall Rappelling!

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
Well... Obama has been elected.  Which means it's time for more honeymoon highlights!

In today's adventure (or more accurately, our adventure from October 15th, 2008), Rachel and I went rappelling down waterfall walls, witnessed a truck nearly fall off the road, and caught some hummingbirds hanging outside our room.

Enjoy.

Hey all;

Here are some highlights from our first two days in Costa Rica.  The good stuff if yet to come though... zip lining, rappelling, monkies and a semi-WILD CAT!

After last night's Halloween adventures, I needed a nap.  Which I took this afternoon.  Only my dreams were filled with strange music.  Turns out, as I woke, there was a mini-outdoor festival happening right outside my street.

So, I grabbed my camera and checked it out.  Sami Cultura and several other Latin hip-hop artists were gathered and throwing down on the corner of La Brea and Pico.  Yeah, I couldn't understand a word of what was being said... but it was cool nonetheless.  A good reminder that LA is a unique blend of cultures -- and sometimes that happens right outside your door.

The gathering was being thrown in honor of "Bruno's Barber Shop".  I used to go there to get my hair cut... so it was good to see those guys again.

All the photos are coming in... and slowly... we are compiling them.  Right now, we're happy to present our brief selection to everyone of the best of day 1 and 2 of our wedding.

These photos represent October 8th & 9th.

October 8th was low-key, primarily a day for Rachel and myself to get acclimated and knock off a few errands ahead of time... you know, like getting our marriage license and purchasing the liquor.

On the 9th, the bulk of our groomsmen and bridesmaids arrived in town.  Oh, and so did Rachel's immediate family.  The afternoon was spent waiting for the rental company to come by and setup the tent and drop off the chairs and tables for the wedding.  Which, of course, ended up happening more or less at the same time as Rachel's entire family arriving on the farm for the first time ever too.

That evening, we got the families together for a meet-n-greet dinner while the groomsmen and bridesmaids went out of the town for dinner.  My brothers and I caught up with some of them afterward for some late night bar-hopping... along with the Grest brothers, our first out-of-town non-wedding party guests to arrive.

There are no photos here of that adventurous evening.
Okay... so in my quest to make my blog ever more relevant (and easy to use), I've set it up so that Ryan Osika and myself will be "live-blogging" the Bachelor party in Vegas this weekend.

Don't think it'll be anything too risque.  But this should be a fun way to look back on the weekend... and (Rachel) if anyone wants to check in on us... well... check the posts.

:-)

As I walked out of Hooters, I was laid upon by a horde of zombies.

This is the 2008 Southern California Zombie Walk.  Random and cool.

The best were the two girls walking by American Apparel.  One commented, in a husky voice, "See?  Those are the patterns I was talking about."  My response to her, "You're window shopping while dead?"  She look at me bashfully, one eye hanging out, her face badly gouged.  "I just like the pattern," she grumbled.

The last time I experienced this was in Vancouver, while covering season two of "MEN IN TREES".
Congrats to Obama.  And all that.  Let me get to my soapbox...

First, I think Hillary is a wise & likely VP candidate.  It makes sense.  Both her and Barack have been ALL OVER the news the last few weeks.  She has name recognition.  She BARELY lost to Obama.  Any other VP candidate would have to be reintroduced to America.  And Obama is not as well known as, say, she is.  And then there's the states and voters that she carries with her.  It makes sense in every manner.

UNTIL... I saw her refusal to concede tonight.

I know the arguments.  People are saying she needs time.  This isn't easy.  There's a lot of people she needs to bring along.  Yes, but.. she just bitch-slapped Obama in his one moment.  She's still on the stage saying it should be hers.  The headlines all read... Obama clinches nomination; Hillary refuses to concede.

Maybe it's just me... but that type of strong-arm tactic doesn't sit well with me.  It makes me think that, if she were chosen as a VP and she accepted, that she would be looking more for a co-presidency than a vice-presidency.

Sigh.
According to the news, Hillary said that she isn't dropping out in June because, you know, "We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California."  Uhm.  WHAT?

This commentator at the Huffpost got it exactly right.

She has a point: June is a great month for political assassinations.

Why drop out of the race before all the assassins have had their say?

After all, we know Barack Obama has received multiple death threats -- because he is black, of course, and because some of our fellow citizens think he's a secret Muslim terrorist who is going to take the oath of office on the Koran and make us all pray to Mecca five times a day with that screechy music coming over the loudspeakers(?) and then he'll fly Air Force One into the White House(?).

But it's all good.  Hillary apologized... to the Kennedy's.

On another note, I learned something nifty from Obama's townhall yesterday.  His name, Barack, is a loose translation for "Baruch", meaning "blessed."  That's cool.

UPDATE (5/25/08):

I just read a very interesting blog report from the NY Times analyzing the gaffe and the media's role in it.  The article breaks down the day from top to bottom.

It also makes the point that she was not referring to Obama, but trying to ground her time-line for campaigning this late in the year.  Other campaigns, she's basically trying to say, have gone this long.  It's not unusual.  Well, that point is arguable too.

From the Huffpost:

Andrew Sullivan suggests that Clinton's comments are a sign of her imploding:

As for her argument that June primaries are nothing new, she is correct. But in no previous primary election did the voting start just after New Years' Day. The New Hampshire primary in 1968 was on March 12, two months later than this year. For June, therefore, read August. Yes, this season has gone on for ever. And for Senator Clinton, it has now obviously gone on too long.

She's been waiting for Obama to implode. Instead, she just has.

Ultimately, what really gets me is that this wasn't the first time she made this comparison.  But her apology made it seem like it was.

Again from the Huffpost:

Time's Swampland blog points out that this is not the first time Clinton has made such comments:

Though she has now apologized for that very strange and tasteless comment to the Argus-Leader, this was not the first time she's said it. This from her interview with TIME Managing Editor Richard Stengel, published March 6.

Her excuse now is that the Kennedys have been "much on my mind these days" with the illness of Senator Edward Kennedy, but that doesn't explain what brought it to mind more than two months ago.

Now, maybe she doesn't RECALL the previous mention... but still, it is a poor choice at a poor time (all things considered).

The end of the NY Times blog is what got me.  It made me feel bad for jumping on the attack wagon.  Even though I do feel Hillary was wrong to make such a comparison... how much was this gaffe exploited to simply bring her down?

After a day like Friday, it is hard to imagine how she keeps going, not just with her campaign, but emotionally. Even if she wanted to let off steam, she can't, at least in public. She may have little heart for carrying her race forward, but she has committed many times to doing so, at least through June 3. She told her audiences in South Dakota that she and her husband and daughter would be back before the primary.

But the day obliterated the arguments she had made in an earlier part of her interview with the editorial board -- that she was "more progressive" than Mr. Obama and would be a stronger candidate in the fall.

And it may have shattered any strategy for trying to win over superdelegates. The question is, did this episode alienate those who would have helped her to find a graceful way out.

As an escaped Kentuckian and whiskey fan, I couldn't help but pass along this article and photo from the Hillary Rodham Clinton's current campaign in Kentucky.  (I use her full name because it goes against her brand right now... she's just "Hillary" according to the campaign.  In fact, there was an interesting article in Newsweek a few weeks ago about the history of her name and how that's affecting public perception of her and Bill's relationship -- and thus their electability.)

And since we're on the topic, can I just say that Maker's Mark is a fine fine whiskey.  But, there's a lot of other good one's too. Knob Creek.  Buffalo Trace.  And even the signature lines from Wild Turkey are pretty dang good.

Here's a shout-out to all the folks attending our wedding in Kentucky... hit up a distillery.  You might not get the presidential treatment, but you'll get some damn good whiskey at low prices.
Rachel and I just got back from a quick trip to Kentucky (visiting my ailing grandmother, but that's another tale)... anyway, about 8 days ago, one of their cows gave birth to twins.  And one was abandoned.  So my parents are nursing the young bull back to health and bottle-feeding him.

His name... Hamburger.  (My father's idea.)  So when we saw this sight, we had to take a picture.

Caption: Hamburger Under a heatlamp

You'll notice in this picture that he has an ear-tag... Number 32.  Yes.  I think that's how many ounces of hamburger he will be...

My mother tried to fight the name "Hamburger".  She even tried calling him Stanley.  We just called him Stanley Burger after that.  It was a battle she wasn't going to win.

Apparently, Hamburger is one of those rare twins.  I forget the exact name my father called it... but his sister and he shared an embryonic blood-flow.  So she's not a, ahem, full female (she has testosterone in her system) and he's not a fully-fertile male either.  He'll produce, at best, %60 fertility.

How did he get abandoned?  After birthing them both, the mother put one calf at each end of the field.  And we think she just forgot about Hamburger.  For about a day, my parents thought one of the other cows adopted him.  They fed him once at least.  But when my father went out to the field the next day and he failed to get up, that's when we knew he was in trouble.

As of when we left them, they were slowly trying to wean him off the bottle.  Between feeding times, they fed him hand-fulls of feed to get him used to eating it, and to help his intestines develop.  Everyday, Hamburger gets stronger.  And hopefully he'll be able to rejoin the group soon.

As for if he can be a pet?  No.  If he were a cow, that might be possible.  And even though his breed doesn't get horns... he still gets horny.  And mean.  So unfortunately, Hamburger could still wind up on a bun.

The best Birthday Card I've received yet...

Caption: Happy Birthday, Buddy!

This email/picture came courtesy of my friend Krishna.  And frankly, it's the culmination of a long running joke.  Several months ago, they were pestering me to go out, when I was totally crashed out.  I don't remember why I couldn't go -- just how I responded to them.

I sent them a picture of my cat's ass.  It was my way of calling them out on being asses.  And now, the favor has returned.

Best.  Birthday.  Card.  Ever.

Goodbye iPower...

Well, it's been pretty painless so far.  SO FAR.

After five years with iPower.com as my web-host, I just switched companies to dot5hosting.com.  And it seems to be a good fit!

(Incidentally, it turns out that Meghan Newell, who originally referred me to iPower as hosts, also left the company a while ago.  Her site with them went down and they couldn't fix it... so she switched over to Dreamhosts.)

The problem with iPower was that, for the last couple of months, their SQL servers have been tortuously slow.  They claim they need to and are upgrading them... but they couldn't give me a timeline.  And, seeing as I couldn't post -- much less anyone else -- to my own blog, I figured it was a problem.

So I've moved.  Unfortunately, my domain names are still registered through them, so it's not a clean break.  I may have to work on that.  And, for the time being, I've had to set up some pretty wonky domain pointers until the domains are properly registered with dot5hosting.com.

Aside from that... blog on people!

And it just got juicy!

Wow.  Not two seconds after posting, I just found out her ex has his OWN competitive blog.  No comments yet, but this should be interesting.

Quick post here... I just found out this weekend that while one set of friends got engaged, another set broke.

Meghan, an ex, just discovered that her (now) ex-bf was cheating on her for 3 months.  The real tragedy of this, from my perspective, is that his actions and mind games have essentially tainted 4 years of memories for her.  When wasn't he lying?  What were the good times?

The one silver lining, she found out just before she was leaving for a three month drive-a-thon trip.  So at least she's free.

Welcome...

Hello everyone and welcome to the new-old blog (kind of like the Old-New Synagogue in Prague, but reversed... and not as holy).

As some of you can tell, the name of the blog has recently changed.  Why, you ask?  Because Superpas.com never really fit.  The sit was originally created to flog a comic book Marqui Jackson and I created while working as Production Assistants on a now-defunct sitcom on the now-defunct UPN network.  I'll retell the story of that fateful comic, along with some old-school images to remember it by, in another post.

Suffice it to say, this is the new-shiny-work-in-progress website that I hope to be the home of the White family bloggers for the time to come.  In other words, my hope is that my lovely wife-to-be, Rachel, and my brothers and sister etc will all be able to post white here.
